Step by step
- Hang up and don't call back.
- Unplug the network cable or turn off Wi-Fi on the computer.
- Uninstall remote access apps you didn't have before (AnyDesk, TeamViewer, UltraViewer, ConnectWise/ScreenConnect and similar).
- From a different, trusted device, change passwords for email, banking, and any account they could have seen.
- Call your bank or card company using the number on your card. Report the charges and ask about freezes.
- If you paid with gift cards, contact the gift card company immediately with the card numbers and receipt.
- Report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI's IC3 at ic3.gov.
- Run a full malware scan, or have a shop check the PC.
Quick answers
When should I stop and get professional help with "Fake tech-support phone scam: what to do if you called"?
Stop and get help if: They had remote access for any length of time (have the PC checked and cleaned). Bank or retirement accounts were accessed. You're getting follow-up calls offering a 'refund'. That's a second scam. Boise Computer Care can diagnose it for a $60 fee; call 208-996-3508.
How long does this fix take and how hard is it?
Plan on 30-90 min. Difficulty: Medium.
Is it safe to try this myself?
Mostly, if you follow these precautions: Hang up. Real companies don't cold-call about viruses or ask for gift cards. Disconnect the PC from the internet if the scammer had remote access.
