Sounds like this?

  • Some keys don't type
  • Keys stick or repeat
  • Wrong characters appear
  • Whole keyboard dead

Step by step

  1. Test with the on-screen keyboard or an external USB keyboard to see if it's the keyboard or the software.
  2. Check language and layout: Windows, Settings › Time & language › Language & region. Mac, System Settings › Keyboard › Input Sources.
  3. If keys repeat or lag, turn off Filter Keys/Sticky Keys: Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard.
  4. Shut down, tilt the laptop at about 75 degrees, and blow compressed air across the keys in short bursts.
  5. For sticky residue, lightly wipe around keys with a cloth barely dampened with 70%+ isopropyl alcohol.
  6. Windows: Device Manager › Keyboards › uninstall the keyboard device and restart.

Quick answers

When should I stop and get professional help with "Sticky or dead keyboard keys"?

Stop and get help if: The keys stopped working after a spill. Several keys in a row are dead (often a keyboard ribbon or board issue). Keys fail and the trackpad also misbehaves (possible swollen battery under the keyboard). Boise Computer Care can diagnose it for a $60 fee; call 208-996-3508.

How long does this fix take and how hard is it?

Plan on 10-20 min. Difficulty: Easy.

Is it safe to try this myself?

Mostly, if you follow these precautions: Shut down before cleaning. Don't pry keycaps off butterfly or low-profile keyboards; their clips break easily.
