Sounds like this?

  • Fans louder than they used to be
  • PC runs hot
  • Visible dust in vents and filters
  • Random shutdowns under load

Step by step

  1. Shut down, unplug, and press the power button once to drain power.
  2. Take the PC to a ventilated area and remove the side panel.
  3. Remove and rinse or blow out the dust filters (front, top, bottom). Let them dry fully.
  4. Hold each fan still and blow short bursts of compressed air through it and through the CPU cooler fins.
  5. Blow out the power supply vents from the outside only.
  6. Wipe the case vents, reattach panels, and power on.
  7. Repeat every 6-12 months, more often with pets or carpets.

Quick answers

When should I stop and get professional help with "Desktop PC dust cleaning (and why it matters)"?

Stop and get help if: You see bulging or leaking capacitors on the motherboard. A fan is cracked or won't spin. Temperatures stay high after cleaning (thermal paste or cooler may need service). Boise Computer Care can diagnose it for a $60 fee; call 208-996-3508.

How long does this fix take and how hard is it?

Plan on 20-40 min. Difficulty: Medium.

Is it safe to try this myself?

Mostly, if you follow these precautions: Shut down, switch off the power supply and unplug before opening. Do it outside or in a garage; dust is a lung irritant. Hold fans still while blowing air. Spinning them with air can damage the bearings or generate current. Don't use a household vacuum inside the PC (static risk).

Which error messages or codes does this guide cover?
