Sounds like this?

  • No lights, no fans
  • Power button does nothing
  • Lights come on but nothing on screen
  • Turns on then off right away

Step by step

  1. Check the obvious: wall outlet works, power strip switch is on, and the switch on the back of the desktop power supply is set to I.
  2. Laptop: plug in the charger for 30 minutes, then try. Check that the charger light is on.
  3. Drain residual power: unplug everything (and remove a removable laptop battery), hold the power button 30 seconds, then reconnect and try.
  4. If fans spin but the screen is blank, check the monitor is on and set to the right input, and the cable goes to the graphics card if there is one.
  5. Listen for beeps or watch for a flashing light pattern on the motherboard or power button. Count them and look up your maker's code.
  6. Desktop: if it powers on then off quickly, something may be loose. Make sure the RAM and graphics card are fully seated (only if you're comfortable opening the case).
